The process

This weekend I came up with a new quilt design and I got inspired to sew... QuiltConQuilt

I picked out the fabrics.

IMG_2659

Got a really good start on it... loads of cutting and started getting there with the piecing.

IMG_2664

It was looking really pretty.

IMG_2671

My kid was super impressed.

IMG_2688

And then...just as I was getting in my groove...

IMG_0087

Yeah. No, that blue line doesn't line up at all. Sigh. Seam ripper time... It's all part of the process, right??

Tomorrow I'm headed to Quilt Market for the weekend. My first quick get away since having the baby. It's gonna be loads of fun!

More traveling quilts action!

Worked on the next month of The Traveling Quilts this weekend. I'm all caught up now which is great! This time it's Jacquie's quilt that I was working on. I received this:

IMG_0041

Jacquie wanted everyone to "add as much color as you'd like" but I straight up couldn't follow directions at all. You can call me boring, but I just had to add some calm open negative space to the already very colorful and lively improv-ed panel.

IMG_0049

I added some interest by continuing the white and grey stripes from the center panel. I know it appears to be off square in the photo, but it's not. I was actually pretty pleased with my execution of this but Gabe seems pretty bored with it, huh??

One other bit of business. I'll be back in New Hampshire visiting family in a couple of weeks, so I'll be speaking to the Seacoast and Boston Modern Quilt Guilds on November 3rd! Maybe you want to come? All of the details are here.

Some sewing!

I actually fit some in this weekend! I have found that long periods of time away from the sewing machine tend to make it harder for me to commit my free time to sewing because I'm out of the swing of it. I miss it, but I'm not used to spending my days back in the sewing room... I need to get out of that mind frame though because once I'm there, I love it! Remember this design? Well I finished the quilt top!

IMG_9971

It's queen sized and I'm really happy with how it came out. Oh how I love solids. I need to do some serious destashing of a lot of my prints - I'm rarely drawn to most of them anymore...

IMG_9986

Now to get to the next steps! I've settled on how I'm going to quilt it, and it's going to take forever because it's (of course) dense straight line quilting. I've never done that on a quilt this big before - wish me luck!

Traveling Quilts

I got another bit of the Traveling Quilts done this weekend.  Faith's calling her quilt "Constellations" so people have been making star blocks for her.  I'm not so into the traditional star look, so this was definitely a challenge for me. IMG_9882

Improv. piecing a star with a couple of Y seams? Not so easy for me! Needless to say, the seam ripper was used a lot on this one!

IMG_9901

I added more negative space to make it more asymmetrical as the star itself turned out a bit less wonky than I was shooting for.

IMG_9905

Here it is with all of the other blocks people have made. Hope mine can find a little spot of its own in the finished quilt!

Pink Greater Than

Pink Less Than

Finished up a little baby girl quilt!  Named it Pink Less Greater Than (my math memory is definitely less than great and I got it backwards! Name adjusted!) because it looks kinda like a greater than symbol.

I made this block...

SMS Modern BOM - October

...for my Modern Block of the Month awhile back and I wanted to make a whole quilt version. I foresee more exploration of this design in the future.

I had fun with the quilting on this one.

IMG_9747

I echoed the piecing with straight lines in gray and then I filled in the piecing with vertical straight lines in pink.

IMG_9754

I was happy with how it came out!

All 12 blocks from the Sew, Mama, Sew! Modern Block of the Month

And speaking of my Modern Block of the Month, I'm going to be teaching all 12 blocks over the course of a year at Sew Modern! Every second Saturday of the month, from 2pm to 5pm.

You can either sign up for the whole year, or just one month at a time!

Center City by Jay McCarroll

For my work I live in two worlds. Mostly the modern quilting world. But I also have spent the last ten years casting reality shows and I have been lucky enough to cast Project Runway for the past few seasons. In the Venn diagram of these worlds, there's just one tiny little overlap of one person. That person is Jay McCarroll, winner of season 1 of Runway and designer of fabulous quilting cottons! He was nice enough to send me some of his latest fabric line, Center City.

IMG_9663

I love it. I really think that Jay brings an original voice to quilting cottons. He is designing prints that are very different from what's out there and it's really refreshing.

Center City is split into three colorways.

IMG_9683

Downtown...

IMG_9680

...Midtown...

IMG_9678

...and Uptown. Center City will be available in September and you can see it really well on Jay's site.

IMG_9695

This great map print is my favorite.

IMG_9688

I can't wait to start cutting into these amazing bold prints! I'm not usually a prints girl (you all know I love my solids) but when they are like this? I'm all about it!

Action Kivu Fundrasier wrap up

Just a quick post to say thank you all so so much for your support of the fundraiser! Together we raised an amazing $17,570 for Action Kivu. What an incredible thing! 404205_10150478928591375_1491580965_n380924_10150465032531375_1209122037_n

That much money makes a real and lasting impact so thank you, thank you, thank you! Together we've really made a difference for some women and children.

All of the winners of the prizes will be contacted within two days.

Action Kivu needs help year round so please think of them and you can learn much more about them on their website.

Third Annual Action Kivu Fundraiser!

3rd annual Fundraiser banner The fundraiser is now over but Action Kivu always needs your help. Please give to them any time.

Time flies and it's yet again time for the Action Kivu Fundraiser! The 3rd annual! Today is the first eighth and final day of the fundraiser, held here on my blog, through this week. The fundraiser will end, and the giveaways will close, on Monday the 20th at midnight, Pacific time.

For those of you who are new to my blog, here's the lowdown: there are amazing giveaways involved in this fundraiser and together we do a lot of good.

If you've been reading my blog, you know about Action Kivu, but for those of you who don’t know, Action Kivu is a nonprofit that helps women who are victims of the conflict in Eastern Congo by teaching them to sew at a sewing workshop. Action Kivu also pays for children to go to school. The conflict in Congo has taken the lives of over 5.4 million people since 1998. Rape is used as a weapon of war, with estimates putting the number of rapes in the hundreds of thousands. These are horrible statistics but together we can make a difference for some specific women and children.

IMG_1361

My twin sister, Cate, runs Action Kivu and she went to Eastern Congo early this year to see the sewing workshop and meet the women there. It was an amazing trip. She saw, with her own eyes, the good that we have done with this fundraiser. For example:

IMG_5414

Cate met this woman, Nzigira, who is a graduate of the sewing workshop and is now supporting her family as a seamstress. That pretty sewing machine she's using?? Our fundraiser last year bought it for her.  She is just one example of many women and children who have been directly helped by this fundraiser.  Please give this year so that we can help even more!  Even just $10 makes a difference!

Last year we raised an amazing $15,000! This year? We're making our goal even higher. We're shooting for $20,000 and together we can get there!!  The American staff of Action Kivu is 100% volunteer, so all of your donations, minus nominal banking fees, go directly to the work on the ground, empowering and educating the women and children of eastern Congo.

See that thermometer on my side bar? (click through if you’re seeing this in a reader) Let's get it movin' up and up and up! The online sewing community that I know, and am so lucky to be a part of, is such a generous place. Let's pool that generosity and make a real difference in the lives of some women and children who really need our help.  Please give.

So here's how it works:

Elizabeth's visit

We had a great time here in LA with Elizabeth's visit! Elizabeth's visit to the LAMQG

She taught workshops...

Elizabeth's visit to the LAMQG

I made a big G and a lil' g using her patchwork applique method. I'll be turning these into a quilt for my husband (Gavin) and son (Gabe). See?? Big G and lil' g!

Elizabeth's visit to the LAMQG

And she spoke to the LAMQG. Elizabeth and her work as such an inspiration. I might add that she's been a friend of mine for years, yet this was our first time meeting in person. It was wonderful and we loved having her!!

The start

I'm getting going on a new quilt. It's a commission so there's a deadline and with the state of my sewing mojo these days, I need one! It's been hard for me to get back into the habit of spending time in the sewing room... Anyhow - on to the quilt! Using Illustrator has increasingly become a part of my process for my quilt designing... I'm always open to a quilt transforming along the way (and it often does) but I've gotten so that I want to see an idea of the big picture before I get started. If I'm writing a pattern, it's a given that I have to work this way, but even if I'm improv. piecing the whole quilt, I want to have a sense of where I'm headed.

Commission

I'm going to improv. piece the columns here, and I won't keep the height of each piece uniform. The end product will look quite different from the digital mock up, but this helps me with the overall color story and with where I'll want to place the different pops of color.

I've pulled some fabrics. That new Kona orange, Flame, is so great. Definitely a needed addition to the Kona line up!

Commissions stack

I need more blues though. I'll pick those up at my great local shop this weekend...

And it's bound to be a fun weekend down here for the LAMQG! Elizabeth from Oh Fransson is coming to teach and speak. We're so excited to have her!

Gabe's quilt top finished

Finally got the quilt top finished up! This whole being a parent thing sure is a time suck. But I'm loving and savoring every minute while he's a tiny lil' guy... And we lucked out - he's very easy going and eating and sleeping like a champ. IMG_9445

I love the Monsterz line for a baby quilt and think this design features it nicely. I'm going to use a lot of it on the back too...

IMG_9449

In other news - on the parenting front I've learned one thing for sure: people love to give your baby shoes. It's so cute I had to take a photo.

Shoes

My sister put it best... "Your kid is like freakin' Imelda Marcos!"

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

QuiltCon catalog released!

Did you all see? The line up of workshops and lectures and teachers was aaaaall released today in the QuiltCon catalog! Lots and lots of info in there... Screen shot 2012-07-09 at 9.29.08 AM

You can download the whole catalog here! It's all so very exciting!

Will I see you all there?!?

We Love Color blog tour!

Today is my stop on the We Love Color blog tour. We Love Color

I blogged a while back about the book and my quilt that is included. The book features lots of beautiful quilts!

IMG_9754

The focus of the book is all quilts made with only Kona Cotton solids. I'm supposed to pick my favorite Kona cotton color and that's incredibly hard to do! Do I go with the one I use the most (Coal) or with a more vibrant fun color?? I guess I'll go with something more exciting than a neutral and pick the yellow in this quilt because I love it a lot... Butterscotch. It's a great color!

And did you know that there are 28 great new Kona colors?

28 Konas

As part of the tour we were asked to feature one of the new colors, and mine is Parchment which you can see in the photo above, third from the top on the right. It's a nice tan-ish, taupe-ish neutral. There are so many great new vibrant colors!

The book tour has been running for awhile now and is wrapping up soon but you have another chance here to win a copy of the book and a bundle of all of the 28 new Kona Cotton colors! Comment telling me what you love about sewing with solid fabrics and I'll post a winner on July 11th. Good luck!

A baby quilt for Gabe

Finally got started on a quilt for Gabe, made by me! The entire pregnancy went by and I didn't sew a stitch of a quilt for him... but hopefully I'll get this start finished up this week. Gabe's Quilt

Oh design wall, where would I be without you? I don't know how quilters work without one! They are so worth the wall space they take up...

Getting into the swing of things...

Today Gabe is 13 days old and I feel like things are starting to settle down! I'm managing to get into the sewing room a little and I know that with a bit more time I'll find myself there more and more. That makes me very happy as I got very little sewing done over the past few months. The combo of being pregnant and having the full time job just wiped me out too much. (By the way,  the best part of having Gabe other than Gabe himself?? I'm not pregnant anymore! Hurray! So great to feel more like myself in my body again.) I got the next round of the Traveling Quilts bee done yesterday. This one is for Ashley. I received this pieced panel from Amber:

Traveling quilts - Ashley (Photo by Amber)

Ashley wants the focus of her quilt to be improv piecing, but I thought there was a need for it to breath some... So I added some borders, one of which included a bit of improv-ing in it.

Traveling Quilts

Hope Ashley likes the direction I've gone in!

The best thing I've made!

Well this was going to be a post about our nursery for our soon to arrive son, but on Tuesday night, things all started happening and he arrived on Wednesday! A couple of weeks early, but big and happy and health. 7 lbs, 15 oz and 20 inches of boy! We've named him Gabriel David and we'll call him Gabe. IMG_8716

Pretty much no question that he's the best thing I've made so far!!

Now on to some photos of the nursery that I took on Tuesday, just hours before I went into labor. It's a small room, so it's hard to photograph but we've had a great time putting it together.

IMG_8663

The quilt you see here was made by my friend Liz Harvatine and it's so beautiful... It works perfectly in the room and we're thrilled to have it.

IMG_8670

Next amazing quilt in the room is made by Jacquie Gering and boy do I love it.

IMG_8698

Not to worry - there will be a post in the future showing more detailed shots of all of the handmade goods this kid is lucky enough to have received. He is seriously one lucky lil' guy!

IMG_8678

He's so lucky that these little feet...

IMG_8766

...already have their first pair of Cons!

IMG_8688

So now that he's here... I'll really need to find the time to get started on making him a quilt!

------ Winner of the Quilting Modern giveaway is Bronwen - congrats!  Keep a look out for an email from me.
