Worked on the next month of The Traveling Quilts this weekend. I’m all caught up now which is great!

This time it’s Jacquie’s quilt that I was working on. I received this:

Jacquie wanted everyone to “add as much color as you’d like” but I straight up couldn’t follow directions at all. You can call me boring, but I just had to add some calm open negative space to the already very colorful and lively improv-ed panel.

I added some interest by continuing the white and grey stripes from the center panel. I know it appears to be off square in the photo, but it’s not. I was actually pretty pleased with my execution of this but Gabe seems pretty bored with it, huh??

One other bit of business. I’ll be back in New Hampshire visiting family in a couple of weeks, so I’ll be speaking to the Seacoast and Boston Modern Quilt Guilds on November 3rd! Maybe you want to come? All of the details are here.

Some sewing!

I actually fit some in this weekend! I have found that long periods of time away from the sewing machine tend to make it harder for me to commit my free time to sewing because I’m out of the swing of it. I miss it, but I’m not used to spending my days back in the sewing room… I need to get out of that mind frame though because once I’m there, I love it!

Remember this design? Well I finished the quilt top!

It’s queen sized and I’m really happy with how it came out. Oh how I love solids. I need to do some serious destashing of a lot of my prints – I’m rarely drawn to most of them anymore…

Now to get to the next steps! I’ve settled on how I’m going to quilt it, and it’s going to take forever because it’s (of course) dense straight line quilting. I’ve never done that on a quilt this big before – wish me luck!

Traveling Quilts

I got another bit of the Traveling Quilts done this weekend.  Faith’s calling her quilt “Constellations” so people have been making star blocks for her.  I’m not so into the traditional star look, so this was definitely a challenge for me.

Improv. piecing a star with a couple of Y seams? Not so easy for me! Needless to say, the seam ripper was used a lot on this one!

IMG_9901

I added more negative space to make it more asymmetrical as the star itself turned out a bit less wonky than I was shooting for.

Here it is with all of the other blocks people have made. Hope mine can find a little spot of its own in the finished quilt!

Pink Greater Than

Finished up a little baby girl quilt!  Named it Pink Less Greater Than (my math memory is definitely less than great and I got it backwards! Name adjusted!) because it looks kinda like a greater than symbol.

I made this block…

…for my Modern Block of the Month awhile back and I wanted to make a whole quilt version. I foresee more exploration of this design in the future.

I had fun with the quilting on this one.

I echoed the piecing with straight lines in gray and then I filled in the piecing with vertical straight lines in pink.

I was happy with how it came out!

All 12 blocks from the Sew, Mama, Sew! Modern Block of the MonthAnd speaking of my Modern Block of the Month, I’m going to be teaching all 12 blocks over the course of a year at Sew Modern! Every second Saturday of the month, from 2pm to 5pm.

You can either sign up for the whole year, or just one month at a time!

For my work I live in two worlds. Mostly the modern quilting world. But I also have spent the last ten years casting reality shows and I have been lucky enough to cast Project Runway for the past few seasons. In the Venn diagram of these worlds, there’s just one tiny little overlap of one person. That person is Jay McCarroll, winner of season 1 of Runway and designer of fabulous quilting cottons!

He was nice enough to send me some of his latest fabric line, Center City.

I love it. I really think that Jay brings an original voice to quilting cottons. He is designing prints that are very different from what’s out there and it’s really refreshing.

Center City is split into three colorways.

Downtown…

…and Uptown. Center City will be available in September and you can see it really well on Jay’s site.

This great map print is my favorite.

I can’t wait to start cutting into these amazing bold prints! I’m not usually a prints girl (you all know I love my solids) but when they are like this? I’m all about it!
